The Forty Thieves

Released 30th April 1836

Notes:

Green’s fifth halfpenny play and released only 26 days after “Red Rover”. With 33 plates used it was also one of Green’s longest, so quite a feet in such a short time. However I do expect that many plates were being produced simultaneously with those of “Red Rover”

Of the 15 scene plates only 3 plates don’t appear to have been used in other plays, numbers 4, 11 & 15. All three of these I have yet to see with Green’s imprint so it maybe possible that even these were to used in a subsequent play.

For the first time Side Wing No.1 was not used. Four new wings were created especially for this play, number 9 to 12.

Both Redington & Pollock reprinted Green’s plates on the lithographic stone and changed the imprint to their own, as this was one of the most successful plays.

Marguerite Fawdry also brought a version of Green’s play, severely cut down in length and images and included with the Britannia Theatre. This was print on card and had to be large enough to accommodate the proscenium in one piece. The publication date was 1971. Pollock’s Toy Museum has recently (2005) re-released this version of the play including the Britannia Theatre.

(The earliest play book in my possession dating from 1836.)
